Burning holy books is akin to religious madness

Egypt: Rima Fakih - What does religion have to do with it?
Rima Fakih, an Arab Muslim immigrant, won the Miss USA Pageant Sunday night. There are those who considered her an Arab victory, those who considered her a Muslim disgrace, and those who dug up her past.
Punning on her name (Fakih means religious jurist in Arabic), Hassan El Helali called her
أجمل فقيه في الكون The most beautiful fakih in the universeHe comments saying:
كده أنا ممكن أغير رأيي في الفقهاءدانا يمكن كمان أوافق على موضوع ولاية الفقيه
بس يكون ريما، مش حد من الدجالين إياهم If that's the case, I might change my opinion of religious jurists; I might even go as far as approving their sovereignty - only if Rima will be the official fakih not one of those impostors we have
Zeinobia wrote a post about Fakih saying
I do not know if this is the result of the Obama effect or Arizona law effect but due to the fact that in 2002 after the 9/11 incident we got Azra Akin as Miss Worldand Hammasa Kohistani as Miss England after the 7/7. Also we should remember former Miss California and Miss USA Carrie Prejean’scontroversy of last year. I am expecting a lot of controversy and media following Fakih and already TMZ has decided to give her a little bit of their royal treatment and comments in news and blogs are full of racist negative remarks about her origin and religion. “I can’t wait to see the reaction of Fox and Friends !!”
It does not surprise me that an Arab girl or even a Muslim girl participates in a beauty pageant contest , as any community and society we got different views and different faces like any society in this world. Of course I do not put much hope on a girl that depends on her external beauty and fabulous body to change a bloody stereotype about the Arab and Muslim community yet regardless of whether Rima Fakih is a silly shallow girl who dances on a pole and wishes for a world peace or not , this young girl has become another Arab American Muslim icon.
Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs shared pictures of Rima's stripping contest and commented
Here is an icon for the advent of modernizing the Muslim world. She embodies everything sharia and the Islamic world deplore -- free women. Burn those burkas, baby, and come on in. The water is just fine.
Given some of the comments and emails I've been getting about this post, it seems necessary to explain that I do not think Miss USA is some kind of role model for American girls or for American culture. What I find positive about Rima Fakih is that she goes against everything Muslims want women to be -- and with all the ways that Islam oppresses women, free will, free women, free people. what could be wrong with that?
Yusra of Muslimah Media Watch wrote: Haters Gonna Hate: the Backlash Against Miss USA
She beat out four blondes and set off a whirlwind of media coverage stemming from her “stripper” past to her Shi’a background.
On the positive side, one idealist commenter compared her to Barack Obama. Another went so far as to say her win shows the “real face of Arab Americans, not the stereotypes you hear about.” Ah, yes, not the burqa–the bikini! Trading one stereotype for another is not progressive, but whatever.
Many in Arab-American community, as well as many American Muslims, supported Fakih’s win. While some Muslims voiced their concern over the message it sends, ironically, it’s the American Christian right who’s angriest.
Conservative blogger Debbie Schlussel calls her Miss Hezbollah and says terrorists financed Fakih’s win. She spun this incredible story while calling Donald Trump a “dhimmi,” whining that Miss Oklahoma was unfairly set up by liberalswho don’t know what’s right for America.
Ahmed Rehab, the Executive Director of the Council of American-Islamic Relations in Chicago, asks a better question: why must a Muslim person’s faith come up the moment that person breaks through the mainstream in any conceivable way, regardless of relevance or context? Comedian Dean Obeidallah offers a sober explanation over at The Huffington Post: some on the far right love to hate us more than they love the ideals of this country.

Another Lifeline to the Opposition in Malaysia.
The voters of Sibu who were predominantly Chinese threw another lifeline , which Wong Ho Leng belonged to, can still thump their chests. Karpal and Lim can still declare the DAP as the main player in the Opposition camp. The result of this by-election proved once again how hard it is to earn the support of the Foochows in Sibu. Yes, some may ask: Are they ungrateful? Maybe, would be the appropriate answer. Why do they go for the Opposition? One answer would be the local economy of Sibu or to be more exact, the retail traders. They are the shopkeepers, Coffee shop operators, Taxi drivers, vegetable sellers, small time contractors and many more. These are the people who wished there were more pedestrian traipsing the streets of Sibu and spending their money at the same time. With the latest development, is there any change in the Parliament? Hardly, if one may say so. With the exit of Wee Choo Keong from PKR the number of MP’s on the Opposition side was one less. Come Ho Leng and the number are there again. The number of independent MP’s has increased by one. The boys in the middle are getting merrier. The question is still; will there be more of them joining in? Yes! Yes! I bet there will be more of them. If we were to take the words of Zulkifli Nordin, there will be more of them. It seemed that the number of party members exiting the PKR is increasing. These days they exited not just in one or twos but the whole branch. It just happened in Kedah and Perak. So, what happened to that party? Is that lifeline strong enough to really lift them out of their never-ending problems? There is that sodomy trial and it is not going to stay put. Anwar will face a Parliamentary Committee on the 8th of June concerning some remarks he made outside the House.

Teenage Fiscal Responsibility
How is it possible that an 18-year-old like Lindsay Binegar can be so fiscally responsible at such a young age? Perhaps a better question is why don't we expect more responsibility, fiscal and otherwise, from our teenagers? How long has it been since you heard about a teenager having chores to complete in order to earn an allowance?
While I applaud Lindsay's self-restraint in saving her money, I think it is unfortunate that it comes as such a surprise. I know children who have cell phones, game consoles, and laptop computers but have never earned a dime. How can we expect these children to become fiscally responsible young adults when we haven't taught them the value of earning what belongs to them?
According to The Obesity Society, in the past 30 years, the occurrence of overweight in children has doubled and it is now estimated that one in five children in the US is overweight. Is it any coincidence given the decline in physical activity among our youth due to too little parental disclipline, too much time spent playing video games, and too much reliance on fast food? As humans, we may be the only species that no longer has to do any physical activity in order to obtain our food. As such, we consume large quantities of fat and calories without counter-balancing it with exercise.
If you're at least 30-something you may have noticed we're becoming a culture of indulgence and instant gratification. Meanwhile, our savings rates have hit all-time lows. There's a valuable lesson for us all in Lindsay Binegar's ability to buy a $40,000 home in cash at the age of 18. Perhaps we should all take some notes.

Ethiopians in Diaspora
Dr. Moses Haregewoyn, PhD, of Columbus, Ohio, has accomplished what few authors have been able to achieve due to his obviously rich and vast cultural knowledge and understanding. He has passionately studied and written about the challenges and triumphs of a particular group of deeply faithful immigrants to the United States, the Ethiopian immigrant who has preserved its faith in its truest form since Biblical times.
Dr. Haregewoyn gleans from his studies and his own personal experience the trials of these and other faithfully devoted, migrating to a place where it sometimes seems as if they are like strangers in a foreign land. However, Dr. Haregewoyn not only presents the problems faced by these (and similar) groups; he also presents solutions and demonstrates how a community can re-establish itself while preserving its culture. This book is enriching reading for the soul and inspirational reading for our global community--everyone everywhere stands to benefit from acquiring an understanding of the words written on these pages. I am left yearning to read more from this author.
Dr. Haregewoyn's book, Ethiopians in the Diaspora and Their Spirituality: The Influence of the Orthodox Church on its Faithful, is available now at Amazon.com.

Tired of your commute? Try a zeppelin
Tired of your commute? Try a zeppelin
It’s late afternoon on Friday, and I’m in Long Beach, getting ready to go to Hollywood. The trip is a commuter’s nightmare for most. But for me, it’s a dream come true. That’s because I’ve booked passage on the world’s largest airship, the Eureka.
I’m sitting with six other soon-to-be airship passengers on a balcony overlooking the runway of a small airport. A representative of Airship Ventures, stands before us. He’s holding a seatbelt. “It works like your car’s seatbelt,” he says, clicking it closed for dramatic effect. We watch, entranced by anything he does. The young many goes on to talk about the company — how safe the zeppelin is, and how it’s different from a blimp (a zeppelin has a rigid body, a blimp is more like a balloon). My mind immediately conjures up vintage fiery Hindenburg disaster film footage. I even remember the Waltons episode about John Boy seeing the disaster in person. “We’ll line you up in pairs,” his voice brings me back to reality. “Once you’re onboard, a passenger from the earlier flight will get off. That way, we’ll keep the airship from rising off the ground before we’re ready.” As he speaks, a tiny white speck appears in the sky, right next to his left ear. The Eureka gets close enough for us to see the Farmers Insurance Group name and brand, which is printed on its side. Our host notices the ship, too, and directs us to the elevator. “O.K. folks, please stay together as we proceed to the van that will take you to boarding area.”
A few minutes later he’s arranged us on the field. We’re lined up in two’s like excited kindergarteners waiting to board Noah’s Ark for a field trip. In front of us, the zeppelin approaches, getting bigger and bigger. Finally it lands and the ground crew scrambles to secure and ready it for boarding. One of the crew motions for me to come. I climb the short ladder and quickly take one of the 12 seats. Soon, the door is shut and we’re quietly floating up and away into the cloudless, blue sky.
Reaching our cruising altitude in less than a minute, we quickly leave our seats. At the back of the cabin, the flight attendant opens a window. “Feel free to stick your head out if you like,” he says. But please make sure your camera strap is secure around your neck. I walk over, stick my head out and look down. Below me, the South Bay is spread out like a blanket of grey and white. I point my camera straight down and start shooting.
We pass over Griffith Park Observatory, circle the Hollywood sign, and then fly over Disney, Warner Brothers and Universal Studios. When we reach Holmby Hills, someone suddenly spots Arron Spelling’s monstrous 56,000 square-foot home. We scamper over to the right side of the cabin, gawking at it like a gaggle of tour bus-riding Midwestern “first-timers.” A few moments later, someone else calls out “The Playboy mansion!” Even at 1,000 plus feet, we’re close enough to spot someone jumping on the mansion’s backyard trampoline.
Above Hollywood, we wave to the pilot in a biplane. It has suddenly appeared and is making wide circles around the airship. The streets and highways below are starting to twinkle with the headlights of cars jamming the freeways. They create a glimmering golden thread, which grows brighter as the sun slowly drops into the Pacific.
We fly over the U.C.L.A. campus, and one of the passengers asks the crew if we can circle the Queen Mary. The pilot gets clearance from Air Traffic Control so we’re on our way. Night has fallen and the basin is now ablaze with lights.
The Eureka sways a bit as we turn to the right. Soon, in the distance, the Queen Mary appears, looking like a child’s bathtub toy. We float out over the ocean, make a quick circle around the ship and then head back to the airfield.
Back on the ground and in the van that takes us back to the parking lot, my fellow passengers are already talking excitedly about future trips they want to take on the zeppelin. One thing is sure, the only disappointing moment during the journey was landing at the airfield and realizing our experience was over.
Airship Ventures offers a variety of tours throughout California, including The San Francisco and Monterey Bays, the Wine Country and Silicon Valley. To learn more, visit www.airshipventures.com, or give them a call at (650) 969-8100.
